Common Mistakes When Ordering Bulk Custom Apparel (And How to Avoid Them)

Ordering custom apparel for a big team should be exciting, but small overlooked details often turn it into a headache. Here are the mistakes that cost time and money, and how to get it right the first time.

1. Sending low-resolution artwork

Many orders arrive with screenshots from phones or tiny JPEGs. On a screen it looks fine; on a 10-inch chest print it becomes a blurry mess.

Result: pixelated logos that look unprofessional, delays for redraws.

Fix: Send vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) or high-resolution PNG. Test sharpness on screen before sending.

2. The one-size-fits-most trap

Assuming everyone is "Large" or using last year’s list is a big risk. Every brand’s cutting is slightly different.

Result: box of shirts too tight or too baggy, so half the team never wears them.

Fix: Get fresh sizes from the team. Mix-and-match sizing is allowed in one order.

3. Picking fabric based on price, not environment

Heavy cotton for outdoor roadshows is a common error. In hot weather it becomes a sweat sponge within an hour.

Result: staff miserable, shirts unused, wasted budget.

Fix: Match fabric to use. Quick-dry polyester (microfiber) is essential for outdoor movement. Cotton or Poly-cotton blends are better for air-conditioned office settings.

4. Forcing the wrong printing method

Wanting a full-color photo on dark cotton polo with silkscreen is impossible. The print ends up thick and rubbery.

Result: design cracks after two washes or looks nothing like the mockup.

Fix: Choose the right method early. Use embroidery for chest logos, silkscreen for simple solid colors, sublimation for vibrant full-color jerseys.

5. Vague logo placement

"Put the logo on the front" is not specific enough.

Result: logo ends up two inches lower than expected, making your team looks uncoordinated.

Fix: State exact position (left chest, right sleeve, center back). Request digital mock-up before production.

6. Forgetting screen colors ≠ fabric colors

"Bright navy" on phone screen often looks almost black on matte fabric.

Result: corporate branding looks off, which is a problem for strict guidelines.

Fix: Use Pantone codes for critical colors or request physical fabric sample. Natural light is the only way to be sure.

Most bulk order disasters come from rushing the details. Ten extra minutes checking sizes, artwork and specs saves a lot of regret later.
